How to price skip hire in 2026: sizes, permits and surcharges

What skip hire typically costs by size, the charges customers forget, and how to make sure they book the skip they actually need.

What skip hire typically costs in 2026

These ranges are from two UK cost guides published in 2026. Where both guides give a figure for a size, the row runs from the lower figure to the higher. The 10 and 12 yard rows are from MyJobQuote alone. Neither guide says whether its table includes VAT.

Skip Typical price
Mini, 2 to 3 yards £60 to £150
Midi, 4 to 5 yards £100 to £250
Builders, 6 yards £120 to £320
Maxi, 8 yards £160 to £400
10 yards £180 to £400
12 yards £220 to £440
Roll-on roll-off, 20 yards £300 to £600

Both guides put London (BookaBuilderUK adds the South East) well above the rest of the country: £50 to £350 more in a London borough than in the north (MyJobQuote), or 20 to 40 percent higher than the North, Wales and the Midlands (BookaBuilderUK).

The charges customers forget

The skip price is the number customers compare. The extras are where hires go wrong:

  • Road permits. A skip on a public road needs a council permit. Typical costs are £10 to £70 (MyJobQuote) or £30 to £80 for two weeks (BookaBuilderUK), and over £150 in some London boroughs. Some boroughs add a parking bay suspension at £15 to £40 a day.
  • Hire period. One to two weeks is usually included. Longer hires are charged by the day or week.
  • Restricted items. Standard skips can't take asbestos or other hazardous waste, and most firms also refuse paints and solvents, gas bottles, tyres, batteries, fridges and freezers. Plasterboard usually has to go separately. Some firms add a surcharge for mattresses (£15 to £30 each in BookaBuilderUK's guide).
  • Overfilling and weight. An overfilled skip may not be collected until it is level. Many firms won't let a large skip be filled with soil or rubble, or charge extra for the weight.
  • Access. A tight drive, soft ground or a skip that needs a crane all change the job.

Put these in the price or say plainly that they are extra. Either works. A surprise on the invoice doesn't.

Helping customers pick the right size

A common cause of trouble in skip hire isn't price. It is customers booking the wrong skip, then needing a second one or paying to have it levelled.

Customers rarely think in cubic yards. They think in rooms, bin bags and piles. Asking them what the waste is and roughly how much (in bin bags, or by job: "a bathroom", "a garden clear-out") gives a far better answer than asking them to choose a size. Waste type matters as much as volume: a skip full of soil is far heavier than one full of garden waste.

Building your own price

Skip prices are built from more than the skip:

  • Delivery and collection. Driver, lorry and fuel for two trips (or one, on an exchange).
  • Disposal. Your tipping or processing cost per tonne, which depends on the waste type.
  • The skip itself. Its share of what the fleet costs to buy and keep.
  • Distance. Some firms include a free radius and charge per mile beyond it.
  • Permits and extras. Passed on at cost, or with a handling fee, but stated.

Because disposal depends on weight and waste type, the same skip can be a good job or a poor one depending on what goes in it.

Getting quotes out faster

Skip firms tend to quote by phone, from a price list on their website, or through an online booking form. Each has its trade-off: phone quotes take staff time, price lists leave customers guessing the size, and booking forms rarely ask about the waste.

A price calculator on your website is another option. Build A Quote's skip hire tool asks the customer what type of waste they have and roughly how much, where the skip will go, the ground, access and delivery. It then picks the skips from the sizes you offer and prices the hire on your rates, adding a road permit where the skip goes on the road. You receive the enquiry with all their answers. Prices are worked out on our server, so your price list isn't sent to the customer's browser.

Where the figures come from

Prices are what trades and cost guides report typically being charged, including VAT where the source says so. They vary by region, by job and by business. Use them as a sense-check, not as a price list.
